外郎家(ういろうけ)は中国で約一千年、日本で六百数十年続いている家で、古くから朝廷に使え、5代目の定治の時に小田原に招かれて来住して以来、薬の「ういろう」と菓子の「ういろう」の製法を伝承し続けています。

そんな外郎(ういろう)のお菓子、「わらび餅」をご紹介します。

こちらの「わらび餅」は一般的なプルプルつるんとしたものとは違い、じっくりと練り上げたなめらかな食感のわらび餅の中に口どけのよいこし餡を包み、香ばしいきな粉をまぶした一品です。

まず、このわらび餅の生地の透明な美しさに目を奪われました。
そして口に運んでみて、しっとり且つ弾力があり、もちもち感のある食感に感動！

餡子の甘さがスッキリとしているからか後を引くような甘ったるさが全くなく、後味が非常に軽いのが印象的でした。

今まで食べたわらび餅の中で圧倒的に美味しかった！と感動するスタッフも。

お店には、外郎家(ういろうけ)ゆかりの品々を展示している資料館もあり、そばには小田原城もあります。
ミシュラン風に表現するならば、ういろうの「わらび餅」を買う為に小田原への旅行を計画する価値がある！と言っても言い過ぎではないかもしれません。

大切な人やとっておきの場面にぜひおすすめしたいお菓子です。

【Uiro: Warabi Mochi】
Uiroke is a family that has been in China for about a thousand years and in Japan for six hundred years. Since ancient times the family has worked for the Imperial Court. And since they were invited to Odawara at the time of Sadaharu the fifth, they have passed down the recipe of medicine “Uiro” and confectionery “Uiro”.
Their “Warabi-mochi” is different from the normal, jiggly ones. The warabi mochi is well-kneaded which makes a smooth texture and smooth sweet bean paste is wrapped in it covered with roasted soybean flour.
First you will be fascinated by beauty of the transparent warabi mochi dough.
Once you put it into your mouth, it feels moist, elastic and chewy, which is impressive!
The sweetness of the sweet bean paste is not too strong but refreshing and the aftertaste is very light.
One of our staff tried the product was very impressed and said that it was the best warabi-mochi she had ever had!
The shop displays items related to the Uiro House in the museum, and there is also Odawara Castle nearby.
I would say, in Michelin style, it is worth planning a trip to Odawara just to buy the Uiro “Warabi-mochi”! This may not be too much to say.
